Design No. 038 – 2.435m (7'11⅞") classic sailing pram

Design 038
Design 038 is round bilge construction originally designed for construction in traditional clinker on steam bent timbers, giving builders a rare opportunity to learn and practice an ancient boatbuilding skill.

Plans are also included for this pram dinghy in cold moulded wood-epoxy on laminated frames (several have been built), which makes a good introduction to the processes required for a larger boat.

And the images on this page are of a ply-epoxy lapstrake version recently completed in Scotland, using 8mm ply with solid Utile thwarts, transoms and trim. A really very nice example of this design.

As with Design 035, this boat carries extremely well for her size and handles nicely under outboard. She is an excellent row boat, and is easy and fun to sail. She makes a great little tender, especially for a traditional yacht. We have actually sold about the same number of plans for both boats, but, being simpler, more Design 035's get built.

Design 038

Design 038 could also carry a boomless spritsail rig, similar to that for Design 035, sporting a small bowsprit and a jib. We would be happy to add this to the design package should any builder request it.

From Stephen Taylor, a builder of Design 038: "It is difficult to adequately express my thanks for your help, encouragement and continued enthusiasm ..... The building instructions and support have contributed enormously to my skills and knowledge and, I think, made all the difference.....".

The detailed and accurate plans together with true step-by-step building instructions carry builders, professional and non-professional alike, through the building process simply and easily. And for larger boats particularly, they allow a managed build to be carried out very successfully. Plans are fully dimensioned; no scaling or lofting is required. The plans and instructions are practical, clear and detailed, containing everything required to build and complete the vessel. Where CNC cutting files are included, or available, they can be sent directly to a CNC facility as required. Professional technical support throughout the build, is available by email, via the forum or by regular mail. More plan info
